Lecture: norient.com – multimodale Musikforschung

On 9 March, Dr. Thomas Burkhalter will give a lecture at the Institute for Social Research (IfS), titled “norient.com – Multimodale Musikforschung”. His lecture reflects contemporary global music, sounds and noises from the perspective of musicethnology and memory studies. The musical works presented by Burkhalter experiment with new possibilities in music production offered by the age of the internet and show new spaces beyond the confines of commercialism, propaganda, and bigotry. They foresee a changing geography of multi-layered modernities, far beyond old Eurocentric cultural concepts.
Thomas Burkhalter is an ethnomusicologist, music journalist, and cultural producer from Switzerland. He works as a researcher at the University of Basel and the University of Arts Bern. As director of the Norient Musikfilm Festival, documentary filmmaker and audio-visual performer, he places emphasis on transdisciplinary approaches between theory and practice.
