The Memory Studies Association (MSA) invites PhD students who would like to deepen the connection of their projects to the area(s) of memory studies to apply to this year’s MSA Forward postgraduate workshop. The MSA Forward is a chance for junior researchers to engage with other scholars in their field and to receive feedback from established academics. As in previous years, we aim to provide a safe space for engaging in constructive discussions and an opportunity for networking and building lasting connections across disciplines.

Within the context of the Seventh Annual Meeting of the MSA, to be held at Newcastle University on the theme of ‘Communities and Change’, the MSA Forward invites doctoral students to reflect on the broader question: ‘How does your PhD align with topics, themes, and/or methodologies within the framework of memory studies?’

Papers will be aligned to the larger conference theme and thematic streams in the call for papers and include links with:

–     Tangible and intangible heritage
–     Public memory and memorialisation in local and global communities
–     The uses of memory and its contentions
–     Activism
–     Social justice and human rights
–     Intergenerational dynamics
–     Migration and transnational memories
–     Decolonial approaches to memory
–     New perspectives on trauma and loss

Other perspectives are welcome, as the MSA Forward aims to reflect the dynamism and diversity of Memory Studies as an expanding field.

The MSA Forward will take place in-person on Monday 3 July and will be followed by the main MSA conference. If selected, you will be required to submit a full paper of your presentation at least two weeks before the date of the workshop. All accepted presenters are required to be active members of the MSA. More information on the membership fees can be found here.

Submission guidelines: Please submit an abstract of your research (between 200 and 300 words), a short bio (100 words), and select the potential areas of memory studies your work resonates with (linked to the streams of the main conference). The submission must be completed online no later than 24 March 2023. You may only submit one application for this edition of MSA Forward. PhD students already presenting in the Seventh Annual Meeting of the MSA will not be eligible for the MSA Forward.

Workshop fee: The participants will be asked to purchase a reduced ticket to the conference of 45 EUR. This ticket will give access to all conference events (panels, workshops, plenary sessions, etc.).

Please remember that the workshop takes place in person in Newcastle, United Kingdom. Some limited funding is made available for travel grants, but participants are highly encouraged to apply for funding from their institutions.
