Ozan Cömelekoglu is a Ph.D. candidate in the Political Science program at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey. Before that he worked for eight years as a research assistant in the Archaeology Department of the same university. Now, with his thesis project titled “We Have Never Been Ottomans: Hybrid Discourses in Late Ottoman Society”, he aims to understand the multicultural dimensions of 19th-century Ottoman press written in Turkish, by reading the past through the modernization experiences of different groups. Mainly focusing on the Tanzimat period (1839-1876), he tries to go beyond the boundaries of methodological nationalism which encompasses the area of Ottoman press history, with the comparative analysis of Turkish press written in Arabic, Armenian and Greek alphabets.
